Indian Cat’s Whiskers: A Hidden Medicinal Treasure from Sanjeevi Malai

Category: Greening Sanjeevi Hills

Captured at Sanjeevi Hills, Orthosiphon thymiflorus, commonly known as Indian Cat’s Whiskers, is a small yet significant medicinal herb belonging to the mint family. This perennial undershrub typically grows 30–60 cm tall, with small, aromatic, oval-shaped leaves that resemble thyme. Its delicate pale purple or white flowers are marked by long protruding stamens, giving the plant its distinctive “whisker-like” appearance, while its stems are soft with slight woodiness at the base.

This herb thrives in open grasslands, forest edges, and dry or semi-arid regions, making it well adapted to resilient landscapes like Sanjeevi Hills. It is particularly valued in traditional systems such as Siddha and Ayurveda, where it is used for its diuretic properties to support kidney and urinary health. Its drought tolerance makes it suitable for sustainable gardening and ecological restoration, highlighting its importance as both a healing herb and an environmental asset.
