A chathram is a charitable rest house that provides free accommodation and food, particularly for pilgrims, travellers, and the needy. Rajapalayam Chathram, located in Pudupalayam, was established with this noble purpose in 1878 by Sri Dharma Raja, the adoptive father of Rao Bahadur A.K.D. Dharma Raja, the legendary philanthropist and founder of the AKDR Education Charity. 

One of Rajapalayam’s landmark heritage buildings, it has served anna dhanam (the free distribution of meals) for nearly 150 years. To ensure the continuity of this charitable service, the founder donated agricultural lands. The paddy harvested from these lands was used to prepare and serve meals to pilgrims and the underprivileged in the past, creating a self-sustaining model of philanthropy. 

Nearly a century and a half after its construction, Rajapalayam chathram continues to uphold its founding mission. Managed by the AKDR Trust, it remains well preserved and continues to provide free meals to around 50 people every day, reflecting an enduring legacy of compassion, service, and community welfare.

Unlike many traditional chathrams with modest structures, Rajapalayam chathram stands out for its palatial architecture. The building features spacious halls, high ceilings, thick walls, and thoughtfully designed ventilation openings that keep the interiors naturally cool. It also includes rooms reserved for distinguished guests. Among the eminent personalities who stayed at the chathram was the late Thiru Kirupananda Variyar, a renowned spiritual scholar and orator.
