Micro Composting Centres (MCCs) have emerged as a key component of Rajapalayam Municipality’s efforts to achieve 100 per cent source segregation of waste at the household level and ensure scientific processing of municipal solid waste.
The municipality currently operates three MCCs to process biodegradable waste in a decentralised manner. They are located at Mangapuram (5 MTD), P.S.K Nagar (5 MTD), and Rajapalayam Municipal Office (2 MTD). Wet waste, including food and kitchen waste, vegetables, flowers, leaves, fruits and paper, is collected and scientifically processed at these centres.
Earlier, waste was transported to centralised compost yards for processing. However, this system posed several challenges, including high transportation costs, the requirement for larger land areas, odour issues and difficulties in maintaining the facilities.
The shift to decentralised waste processing through MCCs has helped reduce secondary transportation costs while enabling efficient local treatment of organic waste. At the centres, incoming waste is processed in covered areas with necessary measures to control odour and leachate, ensuring the production of quality compost and promoting environmentally sustainable waste management.
