As part of the Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam initiative, Ramco Community Services (RCS), with the support of Shrishti Environmental and Livelihood Foundation (SELF), organised public awareness programmes on the SWM 2026 Four-Bin Segregation System at the Rajapalayam New Bus Stand and Old Bus Stand.
The programmes brought together municipal animators, supervisors from AVM solid waste agency, commuters, shopkeepers and members of the public, with the objective of promoting source segregation and responsible waste management practices.
Live demonstrations explained the purpose of the four-bin system and the appropriate disposal method for each category of waste. Participants were informed that the green bin is meant for wet and biodegradable waste, which can be processed into compost or biogas; the blue bin for dry recyclable waste such as paper, plastic, glass and metal, which is sent to Material Recovery Facilities; the red bin for sanitary waste, including sanitary napkins, diapers and bandages, which requires scientific treatment and safe disposal; and the black bin for domestic hazardous waste such as batteries, bulbs, medicines, paint containers and electronic waste, which must be handled through authorised recycling or disposal facilities.
Resource persons highlighted the importance of segregating waste at source to improve recycling, reduce the burden on landfills and protect the environment. The sessions also encouraged people to minimise plastic use, prevent littering in public places and adopt responsible waste management practices at home and in commercial establishments.
An interactive session enabled commuters, shopkeepers and residents to clarify their doubts and better understand the environmental and public health benefits of proper waste segregation. The awareness drives received an encouraging response, with many participants expressing their willingness to adopt the four-bin segregation system.
