What was once a section of Rajapalayam Municipality’s solid waste disposal and compost yard at Arasiyarpatti has transformed into a lush mini forest, demonstrating how thoughtful ecological restoration can rejuvenate even the most unlikely landscapes.
The transformation is the result of a mass plantation drive launched by the municipality on World Soil Day, December 5, 2022, on a portion of the compost yard. The initiative had a twofold objective: to increase the town’s green cover and create a natural barrier to absorb air pollutants and reduce the unpleasant odour commonly associated with composting facilities.
The plantation drive was carried out with technical support from Ramco Nursery, which supplied around 6,000 saplings representing about 35 indigenous tree species. These included the sacred fig (Ficus religiosa), locally known as Arasa maram; the jamun (Syzygium cumini), or Naaval; and the beleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as Thandrikkai, among several other native species.
Experts from the nursery guided municipal workers in adopting a high-density forestry approach, in which saplings were planted approximately one metre apart to encourage rapid canopy formation. The plantation covered nearly two acres of the municipal compost yard.
Four years later, the results are striking. The once-barren stretch has evolved into a dense green canopy of tall native trees, creating a thriving urban woodland in the heart of the waste management facility.
Beyond improving the landscape, the mini forest now functions as a natural air purifier, helping trap dust and airborne pollutants while also acting as a green buffer against odours from the compost yard. The dense vegetation has also become a refuge for birds, butterflies and other small wildlife, contributing to the area’s biodiversity.
The project stands as an example of how native-species afforestation and high-density planting can restore degraded urban spaces while delivering lasting environmental benefits.
