A comprehensive heritage survey aimed at identifying and documenting Rajapalayam’s historic buildings and structures is currently being carried out by Ramco Community Services in association with the Heritage Club of Rajapalayam Rajus’ College.
The initiative follows the successful completion of a similar survey in Palayapalayam, a recognised heritage site. The present exercise seeks to create a detailed inventory of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage, including old residences, temples, places of worship, and other civil structures that reflect Rajapalayam’s historical legacy.
Around 20 students from the Heritage Club have been divided into four teams and are conducting field surveys under the guidance of experts from Ramco Community Services and Ramco Institute of Technology. The survey, which commenced earlier this month, covers all 42 wards of the city.
As part of the documentation process, photographs and detailed information about each structure are being collected and uploaded through the EPIC App, a dedicated digital platform used for recording heritage assets. The database includes information such as the age of the building, year of construction, architectural features, construction materials, present use, and historical significance. Such digital documentation helps create a permanent record that can support future conservation and heritage management efforts.
The survey team estimates that at least 50 heritage structures, many of them around 100 years old, will be identified and documented. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to preserving Rajapalayam’s rich architectural heritage and creating greater awareness among the younger generation about the importance of safeguarding historic structures for future generations.
