As part of its ongoing Solid Waste Management initiative, Ramco Community Services has recently conducted a household awareness and appreciation drive across various wards in the city to encourage sustainable waste management practices through home composting.
The programme was carried out by representatives of Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation on behalf of Ramco Community Services, with the conviction that community participation in home composting can play a significant role in reducing the burden on municipal waste management systems while fostering environmental responsibility at the household level.
During field visits, the team identified and appreciated several residents who have successfully adopted home composting methods such as compost pots, compost bins, and pit composting systems for managing biodegradable household waste.
The initiative not only recognised environmentally conscious households but also served as an awareness campaign for neighbouring residents. The team educated families on the importance of segregating wet and dry waste at source and highlighted the benefits of converting kitchen and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost.
Residents were encouraged to utilise vegetable scraps, food waste, fruit peels, and garden waste for compost preparation rather than disposing of them along with mixed household waste. Such practices help reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills while promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
The awareness programme covered several key aspects of sustainable waste management, including the importance of home composting, reduction of household waste generation, preparation of compost from kitchen waste, effective use of compost for home gardens and plants, segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, environmental benefits of composting, and the need to avoid waste dumping and open burning.
