As part of World Environment Day celebrations, a community awareness drive on source segregation was conducted in Ward 26 of Rajapalayam by Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation. The programme aimed to educate residents on responsible waste management practices and encourage their active participation in building a cleaner, healthier, and carbon-neutral city.
The awareness campaign focused on the importance of segregating wet and dry waste at the household level, a key step in ensuring effective waste processing, recycling, and reducing the burden on landfills. Residents were provided practical demonstrations on home composting of biodegradable waste and the proper disposal of recyclable materials through municipal collection systems.
During the programme, participants were sensitised to the environmental and public health consequences of improper waste disposal, including the spread of vector-borne diseases, groundwater contamination, and air pollution caused by the open burning of waste. The campaign emphasised that sustainable waste management begins at home and that citizen participation is essential for achieving long-term environmental goals.
The drive also highlighted the significant contribution of sanitation workers and Green Friends, whose daily efforts help maintain cleanliness across the city. Residents were encouraged to support their work by consistently handing over segregated waste and adopting environmentally responsible practices.
The initiative reinforced the message that collective action and responsible waste segregation are crucial for creating a cleaner and more sustainable Rajapalayam for future generations.
